Review: The SockKids Meet Lincoln

The SockKids – Solving The Mystery Of Your Missing Socks!

Where do our missing socks go?

Readers find out in our children’s series, The SOCKKIDS. We follow the Socker family through many adventures; from encountering the slobbery mouth of the family dog to meeting Santa as he comes down the chimney on Christmas Eve to helping a fireman save a baby to the most shy Socker going to the school dance for the first time.

Thanks to the time-travel opportunities afforded by the spin cycle of the washer, they learn about some of the most important humans in the world.

Children two and up and their parents will be drawn to the diversity of the family and the universal and timeless lessons they teach: don’t be afraid of new experiences;  treat others as you would like to be treated, and of course, beware of the spin cycle!

The SockKids – Helping Humans Cope in a Smelly World!

My Review: Some people think socks go missing in the dryer, but the washing machine is the culprit! In this lovely children's book, the washing machine is also a time machine. Sometimes a special sock is sent to a special place to learn a special message.

In The Sockkids Meet Lincoln, Stretch travels back to the Gettysburg address where President Lincoln gave his historic address about equality during the Civil War. Stretch learns that President Lincoln treats everyone the same, regardless of what they look like or where they came from.

This is a valuable lesson for all young children to learn. The illustrations were wonderful and eye-catching for both children and adults, and the book as a whole is a great tool for teaching and speaking to your children about tough world issue.

Highly recommended!

The Fangirl's Dream: Fierce Dolan

The Fangirl’s Dream
by Fierce Dolan

Blurb
Siler Dunham would do anything to have Farraj Reza, hero of the smash network TV drama, Endangered. Every week she tunes in to watch him calculate the rescue of fellow bus crash survivors trapped deep in the jungle by a ruthless drug lord. A federal public defender with a penchant for saving the unsavable, she can’t resist his sad story, or his badass charm. When she seeks a matchmaking service to meet him, their one night stand isn't what she expected. Forced to choose between unbridled lust and compassion, Siler must forgo her fantasy... or mustn’t she?

Excerpt
His lashes fluttered, then his eyes widened. The gun didn’t waver. “Who are you? Where did you come from?”

“I’m here for you, Farraj, or whatever your name is. I came to meet you. You know—”

He pressed the gun into her neck. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Hawa’a. That’s it right, what I’m supposed to say—some kind of watch word?”

Jaw clenched, his cheek twitched and she imagined feeling it under her lips. “Who told you that word?”

Balancing on her knees with her arms raised in surrender, she toppled onto her bottom. Grit clung to the back of her legs. Something’s not right. “Madame Eve, the woman who arranged our meeting. She told me to say Hawa’a, first thing.”

As much as her restricted movement allowed, she looked around. Tiny beach. Palm trees. Crystal clear water. The cove….

Annoyed, Siler nudged the gun back with her elbow and stood, brushing sand from her bottom and smoothing her wilting skirt. Sweat beaded her brow, and her carefully disheveled tresses cascaded in limp curls over her shoulders.

“What is this?” Knuckles bracing her hips, she glared down the lowered barrel. “This is not what I asked for. What the fuck? Is this some kind of joke?”

Disappointment rolled in her stomach and tears stung her eyes. I’m such an idiot. “You know what? Let’s just forget this whole ‘one-night’ thing, and I’ll go home.” Palms up, she took a step to one side then the other. The only evident path lay behind him. She would have to pass him, and the shotgun.

The Girl Behind the Gold by Aria Kane

Greek aerial skier Lia Milonas’s parents are about to lose the family farm. Saving it means medaling and landing a huge sponsor. While her no-nonsense attitude has her well on her way to a medal, it hasn’t won her a place in fans' hearts.

“Come back with a story that will make readers cry, or don’t come back.” This is what Brandon James’ boss told him before he left New York to cover the Winter Games for Moment Magazine. With a wink and a smile, he can charm his way into any invite-only party, but that career-making story is nowhere to be found – until he meets Lia.

The two strike a deal that should get them both what they want - but neither would have guessed they’d also find what they need.

Q&A Thursday with K A Davur

Today's Interview is with author K A Davur.

Enjoy & Comment!

What is the worst thing you’ve written, how did you learn or know it was bad, and what did you learn from it?  Like most writers, I have this old folder of angsty teenaged po-e-treeeeee that makes me cringe, especially when I remember that I actually read most of it aloud at various events.  The raw emotion does have to be respected, to some degree, though.  Maybe.

Why did you start writing and when did you decide to go professional?
I’ve never not written.  I have diaries from when I was in Kindergarten or earlier filled with stories.  I still remember the first time I was recognized and singled out for my writing, which was in first grade.  They created a beast!  I took nearly a decade off from writing; people go out of their way to tell aspiring artists of any sort all of the reasons that we will never, ever make it.  It gets so discouraging and effectively strangles one’s muse.  While I’d like to strangle my muse at times (her name is Cecelia and she’s a fickle little monster), I think that’s one of the greatest disservices we do our children.  Help them dream; they will discover reality on their own.

Do you write in more than one genre? Which ones and which do you like the best?  I have written a great deal of non-fiction in the past.  I used to be a doula and a midwife, and was published in some professional journals.  I’m surprised at how much I incorporate the knowledge I gained there in my work now, though I guess it makes sense.  Birth is a naturally dramatic event!  Now, though, I’m writing speculative fiction.  The novel that was just released was a vampire themed comedic thriller for kids.  My next two are for adults.

Do you read other author’s books when you’re writing? If so, do you read the same genre or something different?  I cannot read my same genre.  Either I start to subconsciously mirror their writing, or I get intimidated.  I’m always reading something, though.  Right now I’m reading “Raising Riley” by Brick Marlin and “The Others” by Thomas Tryon.

What is the most difficult part of the entire writing process for you? Queries, pitches, editing..etc.
The hardest part for me is anything that is technologically based.  I’m a bit of a Luddite!  I write everything in comp books that I buy when they are on super clearance for back to school.  I’ve always said that a notebook is an invitation but a cursor is a demand!  The moment comes, though, that I have to actually type it up and edit it and that’s when the problems begin. I take care of all of my own publicity, which means pinterest, twitter, a website, goodreads, etc., so I’ve had to learn quickly.  I’m not good, yet, but I’m at least proficient.

If you could have the same type of career as any author currently publishing who would it be and why?  Kevin Smith!  He gets to go to cons and hang out with all the same amazing geeky folks as I, but THEY pay HIM.  They seek HIM out.  That would be awesome!

The Doctor & River Song, a Timey, Wimey Love Story.

The Doctor and River Song have totally ruined Time Travel for me. To me, there will never be a more awesome, tragic, or mind-boggling time travel love story than theirs.

I have a theory that she's central to the 50th Anniversary Special and the Christmas Special because there a so many clues within her story line that it's possible despite rumors she won't be there.

First, I should say: SPOILERS!!!

Okay, ready?

My theory? River is still going to kill The Doctor

Here's why:
In Silence in the Library our first clue should be the fact that the name of the big bad enemy for the 11th Doctor is...omg the Silence. Episode title coincidence? Probably not. It is also the first time we and The Doctor meet River, but I think, not the first time River meets 10. She didn't act surprised at seeing 10's face. She didn't freak out when he didn't recognize her either. When she whips out her diary, she asks if they'd done the Byzantium yet. Why would she ask 10 that if 11 was the one who was there? Because I think she meets 10 again, sometime between The Big Bang and Silence in the Library (yes, I'm going backward episode wise, but forward, River-wise, confused yet?) and she isn't sure where 10 is in relation to the Byzantium/50th Episode because 10 and 11 are obviously crossing their timelines (which they're not "supposed" to do).

In A Good Man Goes to War, when River is breaking back into prison, she sees Rory. Did you notice her voice and the look on her face when she sees him? Now there are two explanations for this. 1. This is an older River than the one who shows up at Demons Run at the end of the episode and to her, at this point, her parents are dead and gone. Wait! You say. What about Angels Take Manhattan? In that episode, River tells The Doctor she's not in prison because she killed a man who didn't exist. Agreed? Well, the only reason that happened was because of Oswin, which didn't actually happen until Clara stepped into the Time Scar, thus creating those changes. (Timey Wimey) Or 2. She's just really happy to see him because it's the first time she's seen him since they locked her up in jail after she regenerated from Mels into River. Her appearances in Let's Kill Hitler and Wedding of River Song, she's the younger version.

Anyway...in that scene with Rory, she says that The Doctor took her out for her birthday. Rory has a message from The Doctor, too. From a different time, River says. Unless there are two of them, said Rory. "That's a whole other birthday," replies River. Now some may argue that this references the Mini-sodes, First Night, Last Night. I do not think so. I think she's talking about The 50th Anniversary Episode.

In Wedding, we see the young River, not shooting The Doctor and altering time. Once again, she's surrounded by the Silence, and even Madam Kovarian is there, still trying to kill The Doctor. In the alter-time, The Doctor does NOT tell River his name. At the end of this episode, we learn the question that must never be answered, which is hidden in plain sight is: "Doctor Who?" Which has a whole Academy and an order of the Silence Movement trying to stop it. So why can't the question be answered? No clue, but I'm sure it has something to do with the John Hurt Doctor we'll be seeing in the 50th.

Still with me?

Now River goes to jail, spending her days there, and her nights with The Doctor. This explains the little things like Jim the Fish, Easter Island, etc. She goes through her life, ending in the Library where 10 saves her data ghost in the computer core where, apparently, she's been conversing the Vastra.

So...

In The Name of The Doctor, River freaks out when she hears about Trenzalore. Since this version of River is already dead and gone, why would she try so hard to stop him from going there? I think River knew The Doctor's "grave" was on Trenzalore because that's where she kills 11. Each time she killed The Doctor (Hitler/Wedding) her memories are fuzzy. In Angels Take Manhattan she said that she apparently killed a man who doesn't exist,  hence she is out of jail. But why wouldn't the Silence still be watching River? They projected a signal into the TARDIS with Amy's ganger, would they really let River go so easily if The Doctor is still alive?  Also, she probably learns his name here the first time, because she's going to need it in her personal future for when she actually gets to Trenzalore the second time as a data ghost hijacker.

We all know it's the same TARDIS on Trenzalore (as of right now), the window has a crack. (A time crack? lol ok maybe not) We all know that Matt Smith is leaving. We all know there are a bunch of questions left hanging, like how did the Silence blow up the TARDIS in The Big Bang. Moffat may not be as slick a writer as RTD when it comes to sneaky hits, connected stories, and whatnot, but I have a feeling he knew his 11th Doctor story was going to be all about River and The Doctor. Whether he planned Amy to be River's mother from the get go, I'm not sure, but once he decided to do that, he created an amazing story that can only be appreciated if you watch it all the way through...a couple times. :-)

Besides, how awesome would it be to see River be surprised at meeting 10 for the first time. They had great chemistry too, I want to see them interact again!

Did I confuse you enough? What do you think about the River story line?

I'll have another post this weekend on my picks for the new Doctor being announced on BBC America at 2PM SUNDAY!!! Hope you're watching!
