Summer TV and #Giveaway!! #Songland #Suits #The100

Summer used to be my favorite time to catch up on weird shows, documentaries, or books I've long since put on hold. These days, when I'm not searching for a new job, I'm helping authors promote their work, do giveaways, and even helping with newsletters. It's so much fun. If I could do that as a full-time job I absolutely would!! Alas, it doesn't pay well enough, so I'm still looking.

One of the upsides to Summer these days is Summer TV shows. Here are some of the shows I'm watching right now.

Songland - it's amazing and creative and gives breaks to people who need them. Love it!

The 100 - this used to be a regular TV season show, but they moved it. I'm okay with that and I'm really enjoying this season.

Agents of SHIELD - another former regular TV season. I'm kinda bummed about Coulson, but maybe we'll get an alt-reality one via Endgame-ness. Fingers crossed.

So You Think You Can Dance - is one of my all-time favorite talent shows. I've been watching since day 1 and unless they go back to little kids sexy dancing I'll keep watching.

Killjoys, Jessica Jones, and Suits - all three final seasons start soon. Wow, lots of show dropping off this year and next.

Are you watching anything this summer? I think I'm missing a few, but I want to let you know about the giveaway!!

I got together with a few authors to do a Romance Giveaway for the month of June. You can win 5 Ebooks from bestselling authors as well as a $25 Amazon Giftcard!

Want to enter? http://www.jennnixon.com/giveaways/giveawayjune

Good Luck Everyone!!

2019 #TVRecap #2 #TBBT #Lucifer #SWAT #GoT

Summer shows have begun!! That means all the "traditional" prime time shows are coming to an end.

I'm still in the middle of a couple shows like Cloak and Dagger & Blindspot, so I'll just go through everything else that ended so far.

BIG SPOILERS in this one.

Serious.

I'm warning you.

You've been warned! lol

Big Bang Theory
I'm not big on watching comedy shows by myself. I don't know why, maybe I just like laughing with other people more than when I'm by myself. However, BBT is one that I didn't mind, mostly because I'm more of a nerd than people I hang out with and got 99% of the references on the show. Oh, I will miss this cast so much. I loved that Amy and Sheldon won the Nobel. Love that Leonard and Howard both put their foot down with Sheldon and LOVE LOVE LOVE that Sheldon realized how much everyone has done and put up with in regards to his personality. I'm so glad they brought in Kripke, Stuart, and Bert for a cameo before the show ended. I'm not sure they could have ended the show any better and I'm glad I was along for the ride.

Game of Thrones
Hmm, well, what do I say about GOT? There really is so much I could write a full blog, but there are so many recaps and opinions and videos and whatnot, it seems silly for me to do it myself. Like most people I felt the show rushed some of the character turns in the last season. The show is still visually stunning and amazing and gut-wrenching and impeccably acted, but the writer in me couldn't help but meh at some of the things that happened so quickly. I was one of the fans rooting for Dany to overcome her "mad blood" and be a good ruler with the right people at her side. I was miffed at her instant spiraling. I get that the hints were there. I get that she lost everything and everyone who she felt cared for her. I honestly would have liked to see a little more of her turning to the darkside. That being said, I think the characters still living got the best endings they possibly could except for Drogon. Jon really should have adopted him. 😈

SWAT
This is one of three Cop-Centric shows that I still watch. If you've been reading my recaps for a while, you know I used to LOVE procedurals and watched most of them on TV. SWAT is one that I feel breaks the traditional mold. Yes, they still investigate crimes. Yes, they still take down the bad guys by the end (mostly). Some of their infiltration scenes were the most suspenseful moments on TV for me this year. But, what SWAT does differently is that they give us a well-rounded character drama about people in Law Enforcement who are more than just the job they do. I loved Chris' polyamorous storyline, though I think they're hinting at her getting with Street. I adored Hondo's relationship with his mother (Debbie Allen!) and Daryl.

Lucifer
This is the second of the Cop-Centric shows I watch and it's 100% not for the murder of the week. I skipped through most of them last season. I was very happy they limited the procedural work to focus on the characters more and it worked. Maze singing! Linda & Amenadial have a baby! New Angels! Luci's wings! OMG. I'm so ready for a full musical episode. Bring on Season 5!

Supergirl
A good season of Supergirl, not great, but not terrible. I didn't like some of the Sons of Liberty nonsense. I LOVED seeing Jon Cryer as Lex, he was fantastic. And I knew in the finale he was going to tell Lena about Kara. I really hate when characters make a turn for the worse based on someone else manipulating them. It feels hollow to me. Lena has seen enough shit this season to know how dangerous it is to have superpowers and saw the friends and family of people with powers become targets. "I did it to protect you" is annoying, but for this season it made sense. So now Lena will be the big bad next season which is kinda disappointing.

Legends of Tomorrow
Bonkers. I love it. It's my favorite Superhero show on the CW right now. I'm so happy the Monitor showed up, so they're going to be in the massive crossover this fall. I. CANNOT. WAIT. I'm a little bummed that our Zari got timewiped but since her brother (or uncle? he seemed like 30 almost and Zari is only 11 in 2019) popped up, I'm figuring she'll show up again with a slightly altered personality. Mick had a great season too. I was almost about to lose my shit over the Romance Convention story but then it saved the episode with the ending.

So, that's it for now. What was your favorite show this past season? Do you watch anything during the summer?

Why so much hate for #Inhumans? I enjoyed it! OMG #BlackBolt All Hail @ansonmount!

The TV Powers That Be seem to be listening to us 'fans' a little more now that social media is everywhere. Unfortunately, this also means we're going to probably see even more weird reboots coming down the pipe very soon. Rosanne? Really? Whatever. *Insert eyeroll here*

This isn't a blog about reboots, rather Superhero fatigue.

I don't have it, but I think others do.

The 'critics' who always have more pull than we do for some odd reason hated the first two episodes of Inhumans SO much that people were shredding it to pieces before most of us normal people had a chance to form an opinion. Believe it or not, this does change the way many viewers watch things. If they go in thinking it's going to suck, they're going to find reasons for it to suck. I try not to do this when consuming fictional entertainment.

The moment they announce Inhumans as a TV show instead of a movie I was kinda happy. The little reading I did on the Inhumans (Background for watching Agents of SHIELD) I found the Royal Family to be very interesting.

Okay, I'll give you points, the first two episodes weren't the greatest. But show me the perfect pilot and I'll give you a million dollars.

Most TV shows need at least three or four episode to really get their footing. TV isn't like the movies. Movie writers pick up on one or two main characteristics for their characters to build off because you're writing a two-hour movie. TV characters need to be more complex to keep people interested in them over the course of 6 or even 22 episodes. Episode three and four got better and by the time the last two got here, I was already craving more.

Ramsey Inhuman was an odd villain, but he really is a fun actor to watch when he loses his shit, so he kept me entertained. Crystal annoyed me until she reunited with her family. Karnak's side story was kinda dumb and I skipped most of it, but he and Gorgon are fun together. Lockjaw, so cute! I don't even care that the CGI was subpar. I didn't care that they had to cut off Medusa's hair to save the CGI budget. Her reunion with Black Bolt when he touches her head, knowing how violated she was, broke my heart. And finally...Black Bolt. What a great character! I have my own mute character so I know how hard it can be to write one. More more more of this guy please!

Triton was the one character missing in the beginning that would have made this show that much better. They missed the mark on that one, however, it served the story and created a tense and fun climatic ending.

Considering this was a show about a FAMILY, I didn't mind that there wasn't a big huge throw down at the end. Most real families don't blow each other up or imprison each other, they deal with shit but talking. TALKING! I know what a concept right?

They set up the ending in a way that I felt all right if they don't come back for a season two, but would be really excited if they do because this whole season felt like an "Origin Story" for the whole family.

Either way, they're on Earth. Some of these characters need to cross over to Agents of SHIELD. Otherwise, I think I may be broken hearted again.

How about you? Did you watch? What did you think?

Jenn's TV Pilot recaps - Part 1

TV Season has finally kicked off. It seems weird that I'm still watching summer shows, but we'll just tuck that under the carpet for now. So far, I'm kinda impressed with the pilots. There are still a few to go, but here are the ones I've watched and what I thought.

THIS IS US - This was awesome. Great cast, great characters, and lots of realistic people. This is us is a character driven show about a group of people who share the same birthday. Not much of a plot yet, but the show had a great twist at the end. I'll probably be watching this one.

LETHAL WEAPON - I've been a Damon fan for a while, and this is probably the best thing I've seen him in. He's not over the top funny, but funny, and he balances out the crazy coming off his partner exactly like Danny Glover did in the movies. The pilot felt like Lethal Weapon. I'm sure this is going to be a weekly procedural cop show, so I may not watch it, but I'll check out a couple more episodes.

THE GOOD PLACE - I adore Kristen Bell. She's so funny, most people probably didn't know that. Well, she dies and goes to "the good place" instead of the bad, but she probably should be in the bad place, because she's a terrible person. Her soul mate is going to try to help her be better My Fair Lady style, similar to Selfie, which was a much better show than it got credit form. I don't watch many comedy shows but I think I'll record this one a few more times and see how I feel.

NOTORIOUS - I was super pissed when they canceled Covert Affairs, I really liked Piper Perabo, so I was happy to see she's another fantastic character in another great show. This show is loosely based on real people, one a media mogul the other a criminal lawyer. Fantastic pilot with strong diverse characters. It's like Newsroom meets the Scandal team. It doesn't seem like it'll be a procedural law show, so that's a plus for me. I'll be watching more.

MACGUYVER - I don't think this one will catch on. Sorry. First, it has narration, which is fine for the beginning but gets annoying throughout the show. They tried to be all Sherlock with the text on the screen which was even more annoying, and then of course the twist was super annoying because I saw it coming a mile away. Pass.

DESIGNATED SURVIVOR - As much as it pains me to say this, I probably won't be watching this one either. I'm kinda over shows where we're being attacked by groups of bad people and have to figure out who they like Quantico from last season. The cast is very solid and the show was intriguing, and you all know I love Kiefer, but I don't care who did it and I don't care that some nerdy guy is now the president surrounded by a bunch of tools and assholes who all want to be in power and in charge of the country. I'll watch the debate tonight, that's enough for me. Pass.

PITCH - This one, apparently, didn't do well in the raitings, but I really liked it. I played baseball. I loved it, actually. I hate watching it on TV because it's boring, but I love baseball movies, so I was very excited to see this one. The plot was a little annoying in how they treated her first game, but I get it, it's an underdog story. They also added a twist, which I'm still not sure if it's cheesy or interesting, I guess it depends on where they go with it. I'll watch a few more of this one too.

So, what have you watched so far? What do you love? What did you hate?

Jenn's TV Recap #3

Well, regular TV is over for the season. Do you remember when 90210 had their summer season? They pretty much started that trend. I have a few shows to look forward to this summer, sadly, only of them is NOT So You Think You Can Dance. Makes me sad.

Anyway, I have a nice long list of shows to recap for my final blog of this season. They are not in any order. POSSIBLE SPOILERS!

Seriously.

Last warning!

SUPERNATURAL
While I didn't really care about the Amara story line for the most part and really hate Rowena, Cass as Lucifer totally made up for it. Then they bring in Chuck at the end...confirming him as God? Freaking brilliant. The last few episodes of the season were fantastic. I'll never stop watching the Winchester Brothers. I don't care if they jump the shark or not.

LEGENDS OF TOMORROW
I should just go and live at The CW. I don't think the writers thought through this plot enough but for a short, first season, it was pretty good. I liked all the cheeky time travel easter eggs and tropes they pulled out. I hated how they bounced around time, just to end up back at the same spot they started. I did, however, like how they eventually split up into three teams in three times to beat three Savages. That was pretty brilliant and saved the season. And no lie, I was JUST starting to like Snart and then they kill him. Meh.

THE FLASH
This is probably my third favorite show on TV right now behind GoT and TWD. I love the entire cast, younger and older members. I love the fun and lightness. I don't mind the darker stuff either. Although I know the original Flashpoint story, it didn't work for  me how they got there at the end of this season. However, I got the man in the mask partially right, so I'm glad we get to see more John Wesley Shipp on the show.

AGENTS OF SHIELD
I've never had a problem with Skye/Daisy. This probably goes back to my comment once about acting. I can't, so unless someone is really bad and I don't believe they are the character they are playing, I probably won't notice much. That being said, Ward as HIVE was amazing. I'm really going to miss him. I think this show gets better each season, so I can't wait to see what they have in store for S4.

CASTLE
What a horrible ending! OMG, I know it was tacked on just "in case" they got canceled, but man, couldn't they have thought of something better? Or asked ABC for a two-hour movie tie up next season? There are a dozen ways they could have done this, but they chose to screw their fans and take the easy way out. Oh well. Don't have to worry about it anymore.

THE ORIGINALS
This is another one of those shows I'm not sure why I still watch. It's probably because I have a crush on Elijah. Love that character. I was SO excited to see Marcel die at the end of this season. He's always been one of my least favorite characters. He just rubs me the wrong way. However, his relationship with Davina was his saving grace. I hope Vincent sticks around next season. He's awesome. RIP Cami, I'll miss you most of all.

ARROW
I'm really happy they went all 24 and dropped a bomb. There is only so many threats the team can thwart without having hardly any consequences. I didn't care about Laurel's death. She was just an OK character, I liked her MUCH better on The Flash, so I hope they bring her back there. Damien was a badass character but I feel like there was something missing this season and I just can't put my finger on it. Next season should be interesting with Oliver as Mayor.

So that's pretty much it. Now I have lots of time to write some books this summer! What was your favorite new show this year? Did one of your old favorites surprise you this season?

Would you be interesting in reading a blog post about the new shows coming next season? I can start working on it if you guys are interested. :-)

TV Pilot Recap (sorta) #2

Well this idea was a big fat bust. LOL I thought I would try to watch a few extra pilots this year, but after the last two I just suffered through, I gave up. Besides, Supergirl is the only other pilot out there that hasn't aired yet this year (and maybe My Crazy Ex Girlfriend) and I've already seen it twice.

Here's my take on the last three:

Rosewood (Fox) - Aside from Morris Chestnut being super hot, there's not much to this show that I haven't seen a thousand times on every other procedural show. As soon as he started going all Sherlocky in the first ten mins, I was rolling my eyes. Then the info dump of characters came next. Meh. I made it halfway through before losing interest and turning it off.

The Player (NBC) - The first fifteen minutes of this show was awesome. I was starting to get mad at myself for liking it because I had a feeling I wouldn't so I kept watching and then BAM! They ruined it with this gambling on crime nonsense. Personally, I think the show would've been way better if he stayed a private security contractor. Shame, Winchester is a good actor.

Quantico (NBC) - I'm not sure about this one yet, but I will be watching episode two. I have my preliminary pick for the terrorist, but I'm not sure about the acting. Some of it comes off as cheesy to me, but it's a good, interesting mystery and it will not be following a procedural formula, rather a flahsback-present day formula which could be interesting.

I may watch Dr. Ken, because he's hilarious, but I don't think I'll be watching many more pilots.

I'll do a TV Season Premier blog soon!

#Heroes binge rewatch & recap!

Oh Heroes, you were pretty awesome, with a few minor exceptions.

I decided to binge re-watch Heroes and last night I finished Season 3. I'm kinda scared to go back to Season 4 but we'll see how I feel next weekend. LOL

I will say this right off the top, the binge watch for this show made it a much better show than when I had to wait week to week. With all the information fresh in my head, I found Season 3 to be spectacular as far as storytelling goes, but I'm jumping ahead and I'm no Hiro, so let's go back...

In the very first episode, I totally fell in love with Hiro and Ando. They were my favorites back then. They spoke in Japanese! How awesome. After the rewatch, I still love them both, but it's Peter who stole my heart this time around.

Admittedly, I skipped over big chunks of Niki's and Micah's story, mostly because I didn't really care for her weirdo dual-personality power thing. Once they got together with DL and went after Linderman, they all became way more interesting. I think the main problem was that the majority of their story was not abilities related, rather mob and crime related which didn't fit very well in my opinion. Also, the majority of Niki's "Hero Journey" was performed by Jessica. Annoying!

Watching the show a second time knowing the backstory for some of the characters like Angela and HRG Bennett definitely made their gray choices much more significant. She got arrested for stealing socks in the first episode and we didn't find out why until late in season 3 but man, it really hits hard the second time around when you put it together because I'll be honest, I'd totally forgotten about that the first time I watched this show. The way the show connected Season 3 and the 1st Generation parents to Season 1 and the kids is utterly fantastic, especially the whole Arthur Petrelli story line. The first time I watched the show, I hated him and his story and thought it was stupid. The second time? Holy crap!

Anyway, I'm getting ahead of myself, again. The main problem with Season 1 is the extra characters like DL and Eden and Ted and Candice and Molly and pretty much everything that went down in Vegas. There was just too much time spent on these guys in S1 which took away from the characters everyone already loved. Characters like Claude (Doctor #9!!) were perfect in that they advanced a main characters story and didn't stick around too long. I even skipped the Hiro/Ando story in Vegas during the rewatch.

The Company Man is probably one of the best episodes aside from the pilot. This was all about HRG Bennett and man what a character he is. So badass. He's the kind of guy you never see coming. Everything he does is for the love and protection of his family and the world. He's morally gray and has no problems being so.

The second big problem with the show as a whole is that nothing bad ever really happened. Everything that "may happen" was only seen in Flash Forwards when Hiro or Peter moved through time. Even 24 had to make a bomb go off eventually.

The final few episodes of S1 bring all our Heroes together, finally, to stop the big bad from happening and it was kind of a fizzle. Yes, I know they were supposed to save the world, but you had all these amazing characters with powers and no huge ass fight scene? Ugh, it's what we were waiting for!! It really would have been awesome.

Season 2 began with Hiro in the way past, Peter with no memory, Nathan is a drunk bum, and new characters (Maya) that no one really cares about and whose story I pretty much skipped over again. Claire's trying to live a normal life but then West shows up--another good use of a secondary character.

While I wasn't thrilled with the amount of time they spent in feudal Japan simply to introduce us to the Kensi aka Adam Monroe character, who they underutilized completely, I understand why they did it. This was also the time of the Writers Strike in Hollywood, so I'm pretty sure this was not the season they wanted. They began peppering in the 1st Generation parents again, and gave us even more characters not to care about, Monica, Catilin etc. The flashback episode "Four Months Ago" gives you enough information about all the crappy side characters to get through the rest of the season, So, don't be surprised that the same damn thing happens at the end of this season, nothing bad happens. It was kind of a reset button for the most part...on to Season 3!

The third season started off with a bang and almost got very, very confusing with all the face swapping and mental manipulation. I didn't skip the Tracy plot because it was probably the first time she was relevant as a character...although I really hated the twin thing. Keeping her with Nathan saved the story line from getting annoying. But the Mohinder subplot was the one I did skip this season with a few minor exceptions when other characters showed up. I get what they were doing but it felt very out of character for him overall. They also did a great job of putting characters together and in different situations like HRG and Sylar, they had some fantastic moments.

I like how some of the secondary and minor characters from S1 and S2 were pulled together for Arthur's little team in a very organic way. The Flashback episode "Villains" was one of my favorites of the season. It basically tied all the main players together in a massive plot that I didn't see coming the first time and enjoyed even more the second time. However, at this point, they totally screwed Hiro's character and made him rather pointless for the rest of the season much to my annoyance. They did this a couple times, gave characters information or abilities only to take it away a second later for "character development" or conflict.

The new group going after our powered Heroes are set on course by Nathan, of course, big jerk, but as usual  Peter isn't having any of it pitting the brothers against each other, again. Of course Nathan eventually realizes what an ass he's been, but of it's too late, the government is the new "The Company" problem is they don't seem to care about the good powered people, they want to off everyone! Figures.

As we head toward the end of S3, we get some fantastic flashbacks of the 1st Generation as teenagers and learn how and why The Company formed. The extended Petrelli family, including Claire and HRG come together, heal their wounds and finally all start working together for a common cause, taking down the new group and a newly evil-fied Sylar. Despite the fact that so much has changed, it seems like we are heading toward Sylar as Nathan becoming President...anyway. I'm not sure why they went this way because they ended up killing Nathan to do it which kinda sucked, but gave us a great scene with Angela, man I felt her pain.  And again, nothing majorly bad happened as we come to the close of S3.

I'm not sure I'll watch all of S4. I may just watch everything pertaining to HRG and Hiro since they are in the new show, but I can't see myself caring much about anything that happens at the carnival save the last episode, which also comes into play with Heroes Reborn.

Although we don't have Peter or Nathan in Heroes Reborn, we do have Hiro! And HRG and Angela, too, and they are a pretty creeptastic badass team. I'm looking forward to it. How about you? Did you make it past S1? Who is your favorite Hero? Do you wish Sylar was coming back too or do you think Zachary Levi's eyebrows will fill the void?

Mid Season TV Finale Recap - Jenn Style

Do you remember, way back in the day, you know 1985 or so, when TV shows started in September and ended in June? Kinda like school.

Well, there was this one popular Prime Time show in the 1990's that decided to do a summer season. Yes, that's right, you can all blame 90210 for the Summer TV Season. Though, in my opinion we should thank them. Some of my Summer TV Shows are sneakily making the transition to Prime Time due to the networks even sneakier Mid-Season TV show Debuts.

Anyway, I'm not really doing to talk about that. I'm going to talk about the shows!

Here are a few that have already taken their break for the Holiday Season with awesome WINTER/MID-SEASON FINALES!

I'm going to do a new format. 1. Why I started watching 2. Why I'm still watching and 3. What I liked most about it so far this season.

The Walking Dead
1. Zombies on TV, duh.
2. It's so gross and pure escapism.
3. Carl and Darryl make this show for me. I hate Andrea now. I didn't like her, then I loved her, now she annoys me, but it's realistic in a sense because they have her shielded away. The Governor is so bad it's good.

Once Upon A Time
1. Live Action Disney Fairytale Show? I've been hankering for something like this since Annie Leibovitz did her Disney photos in 2007
2. The characters are plentiful and familiar with nice twists on some of them and the story is evolving well.
3. Neal & Hook. Though I have a feeling Neal may be Balefire and just doesn't remember...

Revenge
1. I started watching this one because everyone was talking about it.
2. It's like Gossip Girl meets Days of Our Lives...and since GG is done this year and I don't watch Days anymore, this is a nice girlie replacement for me.
3. Aiden, Aiden, Aiden. I love a man with an accent...

Castle
1. It's about a writer who works with the cops.
2. Castle and Esposito, I love them!
3. I love a show that pokes fun at itself and it's actors. The Sci-Fi themed episode! Hilarious. The wacky episodes are my favorites.

I think that's it for last week. This week I'll have a bunch more Mid-Season Finales to go through. What are you watching?
