I'm very much the lurker on many, many blog/web sites. If I'm following you, I'm reading you. Honest. I have a gazillion blogs on my lists. If I commented on every one I've read, I'd never have time to sleep, or eat, or write my own blog.
But...I am reading.
Over the last few months, I've subscribed to at least 100 more blogs. People from writer's groups, new friends I made on Facebook/Myspace/LJ/Blogger. It's almost to the point of information overload, but I can't help myself. I need to know. I need to learn. I need you!
What I love most about blogging and social networking is that I can find people with similar interests. I'll admit, right now, the majority of my "friends" are writers or people I know. There are others out there who share specific interests with me, like TV, movies, Sci-Fi, Anime, etc...so no matter what I'm doing, I always have someone to share the fun with!
In other news...I've sent out a couple query reminders yesterday. I really hope to get some good news before my birthday. Making the top 100 in the Amazon contest would be awesome. That might be a big selling point to agents/editors. If not, I'll keep plugging away as usual.
I did send out a few new queries in January and March. No word yet on those, but it's still early. Won't bother anyone for at least three months! Gotta follow the rules kids, otherwise you get kicked out of the playground!
Being the eternal pessimist, I try not to get my hopes up too much because the crash after disappointment doesn't work well for me. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a cranky pessimist or self-hater, I guess I'm a realist. Maybe.
I told a friend of mine I would be very surprised (and uber happy) to make it into the next round of the Amazon contest, but I wouldn't be too upset if I didn't. He asked why. I said: "There are a ton of writers out there who are better than I am. If I make it, I make it, if not, oh well." Pessimist or realist? I don't know. What I do know is that there are a shit load of writers out there worse than me. But, I was like them once too. Passive voice. Telling not showing. You know, all those writerly things that drive an editor nuts.
Good thing about writing, you don't actually have to have a natural talent for it, it helps, but you can learn. Learning the craft doesn't mean you'll be a NY Times Bestseller or Pulitzer winner, but you'll definitely be a better writer.
I know I am.
Reading all the blogs that I do helps me. What do you do to improve your writing?

Good post. Like you, I have been on a blog-reading adventure of the past 6 months or so, learning everything I can about improving my craft. I disagree with you however, about people being able to write who don't have the talent. While I do think people can learn to "follow rules" of writing, I believe its like any other talent. Some people have it, and some people don't. Don't get me wrong, I don't mean to crush anyone's hopes and dreams. But I consider myself a realist too, and I know I'll never be American Idol's next winner(despite the fact that I love to sing). In other words, I know what I can do and what I can't. But I wish both of us luck in this writing adventure.
I knew you were reading my blog, but thanks for posting anyway :)
