I asked my Chat Room/Street Team Friends which topic I should cover in this newsletter. They picked "Why I write SciFi" by a decent margin.

Let's start with a little background. When I first began writing for fun and not school, it was usually a mystery or something having to do with crime or suspense. To me, mystery is everywhere and in most things we watch and read. No matter the overall genre, there is always something you want to know, which keeps you invested in watching or reading. Take Lord of the Rings. Some of the first questions I asked myself is: What's outside Hobbiton? Who is Gandolf? How are they going to outrun the Ring Wraiths?

The first few novels I wrote AND finished were mystery/suspense. It was my preferred genre to read, Mary Higgins Clark, John Sandford, Iris Johansen, and Lee Child were a few of my favorites. I figured that was the genre I knew best, so I should try to write one of those. While I do love my non-SciFi books (I do have a few published), I always felt like something was missing.

While I had always dabbled in SciFi (mostly fan-fiction), I knew that most published SFF writers were male and rarely had a romance angle. All of my books have some type of romance or couple or love story. I wasn't sure I'd "fit" in that world, so I wrote Romantic Suspense instead.

Then, in 2001, I created a character to play an Online Star Trek Roleplaying game. You may know her, her name is Tiva Boon. In order to create her, I needed a backstory. I came up with two or three simple paragraphs, just to get something down, and didn't think much about it.

After playing Tiva for a couple of years, I had half of her life story living in my head. Around that same time, I noticed more female SFF writers like Ann Aguirre, Linnea Sinclair, and Veronica Scott were being published and heavily marketed online. I thought, maybe women writing SFF isn't such a crazy thing anymore, and was SO happy to learn that SciFi Romance was now an actual subcategory!! So, I decided to give Tiva's story a chance.

While near the end of writing the second Tiva Boon book, I realized that my love for SciFi and realistic relationships made for an interesting combination in the SFF world. I started writing the MIND series almost immediately after writing Tiva, and had so many ideas for it, that two of my other series' came from writing first two series'!

Now, whenever I come up with a story idea it has a SciFi twist or component to it. Right now, I'm brainstorming book three of the Monarch Mission Files and think I figured out how to finally write the Time Travel Romance I've been hankering to do for about ten years.

I may always have a mystery to solve in my books or some suspenseful scenes and moments, but my heart belongs to SciFi now, and I couldn't be happier.
